American Idol "Final Judgment Cuts At The Judge's Mansion", Summary of Episode 11
By Marcus Check out our extensive news articles on American Idol at AmericanIdolHeadlines.com American Idol, February 11, 2009, “Final Judgment Cuts at The Judge’s Mansion”, Summary of Episode 11 By Marcus Read about the late-night changes to the top 36 here American Idol producers have heated up the competition while whittling down the remaining 54 into the final 36 hopefuls. Some will be given the good news. Some will have dreams shattered like a Baccarat crystal wine glass dropped onto a slate floor. And others will be given one last opportunity to sing for reconsideration. And there will be Western high noon gunfights in the way of a “sing off.” Tonight may prove to be one of the best shows of this series. There was little doubt that the first two singers would make the cut, that is, Anoop Desai and Von Smith. But after them we had our first sing off with friends Cody Sheldon singing a tired drab version of “Love Remains The Same” while Alex Wagner-Trugman singing “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.” This was no contest as Alex trumped Cody big time who is now packing his bags. Talented Adam Lambert and radiant Taylor Vaifanua easily made the cut. Others who made it were Jasmine Murray, Arianna Afsar, Casey Carlson, Megan Corkrey, Mishavonna Henson, and Stevie Wright. Having had brief past vocal recording success, Joanna Pacitti knew that this was really her last opportunity to show us who she is. And she will get that opportunity in Season 8. I have high hopes for her. It is no surprise that these three men were given a ticket home: T K Hash, Chris Chatman, and Reggi Beasley. Even though Kendall Beard sings boring old songs, she made the cut. And another gunfight, ahh, I mean sing off, took place between Jenn Horbee singing “I’m Not Ready To Make Nice” versus Kristen McNamara singing “I’ll Always Love You.” Although Simon strongly disagreed with the other three judges, it was Kristen who will be staying while beautiful and talented Jenn hits the road. I think Simon was right and the others made the wrong choice. Young single mother Alexis Grace; and mother of three Lil Rounds both made it through. Blindness is not stopping the talent of Scott MacIntyre as he made the cut. But then we had three women who lost their dreams, Felicia Barton with a mixed judges decision, along with unanimous decisions for Ashley Hollister and Devon Baldwin. It was sing off between Frankie Jordan performing off key “All Of These Lines Across My Face” and Jessie Langseth nervously singing “I’m Coming Out Of My Wishing Well.” Both of them failed to impress the judges with their respective poor song choices, but someone had to stay. Staying is Jessie Langseth. Simon who must be sharpening his tongue with extra strokes told Frankie that had she stayed, she never would have won the competition. He then told Jessie that even though she made the cut, she will not win. Cold and ice hard is that man’s heart. But is he right? Two more who did not make the cut were Shera Lawrence and Derik Lavers. But powerful singer 16 year old Allison Iraheta did. Best friends Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers wanted to continue together for the rest of the competition. But that will not happen as confident singer Danny Gokey will continue but a truly shocked Jamar Rogers is going home. I disagreed with Jamar’s leaving as did most of the contestants in the waiting room. The judges’ decision making was brutal. Then five men quickly made the cut: Ricky Braddy, Matt Giraud, Ju’Not Joyner, Jorge Nunez and Brent Keith. I was quite surprised that Steven Fowler was given an opportunity to continue. Remember him? He is the singer who was so overwhelmed with stress during Hollywood Week that he stopped playing his keyboard, stopped singing and literally walked off the stage. Why the judges gave him the go ahead while booting off Jamar Rogers is beyond me. And then we came to the dual
personalities of the crazed Norman Gentle and focused rational Nick
Mitchell. It
was Nick who appeared before the judges who admitted that they spent their most
discussion time about his performances, which are really a shtick. He admitted
to them that he is trying to mold a passion to make people laugh along with
serious contemporary singing. And tonight he got his wish as he will continue to
compete. Will be compete as Nick? Or will it be Jackie Tohn was so excited that she made the cut, she ripped off her heels and ran down the halls shrieking with delight. And then we came to the ever annoying and always begging “please please please dear God, let me stay in American Idol, I’ll be such a good girl, please with sugar and honey, please please” Tatiana Del Toro who showed off her recent star bracelet purchases of Paula’ new jewelry line but she was too late to buy a ring that had sold out. Paula, whether out of compassion or sheer marketing genius, took off her own ring from her right hand and placed it on Tatiana’s. Then they announced a mixed decision to allow her to stay and continue in the contest. I think that is a wasted spot but at least we will be entertained. It was another sing off pitching Jackie Midkiff with “When A Man Loves A Woman” against ‘The Big Bawler” Nathaniel Marshall complete with ear lobe plugs singing “I’m Already There.” Nathaniel is staying while we are losing Jackie. But, I have no vision of Nathaniel making it beyond the top 21. The judges gave approvals to Kai Kalama, Anne Marie Boskovich, and Kris Allen while giving a mixed decision to continue to Jeannie Vailes. But it was the last two singers who standout in my thinking. It was head to head sing off with two physically powerful men. They are married, they are hard workers and they have children. Professional welder Matt Breitzke tensely sang “If I Fell At Your Feet” while relaxed roughneck oil platform worker Michael Sarver performed “When I Wake Up In The Morning.” The judges listened and debated. The decision? Both Matt and Michael are going through to the next round. And that is an excellent decision. Thus ends an exciting night of American Idol.
