American Idol, "How Did The Second Group of Three Earn Their Spot in the Top 12?"  2/27/09

By Marcus

After tabulating over 25 million votes, last night Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen, and Adam Lambert won three coveted stools to join Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver for the Idol finalists. There are just 6 more stools left and then we will have our Top Twelve.

But why did those three win last? The easiest answer is for Allison Iraheta. This powerhouse young singer is identified as pure natural raw talent. Now, what does that exactly mean? She is just 16 years old and her youth and inexperience was quite evident during her brief interview with Ryan Seacrest just before she went on stage to sing “Alone.” To be brutally honest, that interview stunk. She was wooden. She could not think on her feet and her discomfort with Ryan’s questions was profound. But when she walked onto the stage and the music started, she transformed herself into a singing sensation. That transformation from a chunk of coal into a diamond is the very definition of “raw talent.” She will be hard to beat as the contest progresses.

Twenty-three year old college business major Kris Allen took a real chance performing Michael Jackson’s smash hit “Man in the Mirror.” He has been playing guitar and singing for ten years and that familiarity has given him an advantage over some of the other lessen experienced contestants. The camera likes his looks and since most of the other Group Two contestants turned in either poorly selected or / and poor executed performances (think of early favorite Jasmine Murray or and nice guy Matt Breitzke), he easily earned a stool spot.

With over eight years of stage acting and musical theater under his belt, twenty-six year old Adam Lambert is dangerous. He has that Elvis lip sneer, sexy drooping eyelids with a threatening “get outta my face” swagger. His voice is rich, powerful and exciting. He photographs well and when he sings, he smolders with heat.

And that is why he easily filled one of the three stools of the top12 performers for American Idol Season 8.
